Samaritan Village to Host 12th Annual Highbridge Health Fair
Samaritan Village's Highbridge Residential Treatment Program will host its popular Highbridge Health Fair/Block Party - rain or shine - on September 12, 2015. The event will take place on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard between 170th Street and Boscobel Place in the Highbridge neighborhood of the Bronx from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Samaritan Village has been hosting this festive event as a way to "give back" to its neighbors and promote health and wellness to the community. Clients and employees of our Highbridge facility will serve as volunteers. They will be joined by a long list of community supporters including HELP/PSI, Damian Family Care Centers, Highbridge Community Life Center, and the Bronx Children's Museum, among others, who provide information and free services such as health screenings.
The 6th Annual Kalief William Basketball Tournament will also be held as part of this event. The tournament is named in honor of a 15-year-old community resident who passed away in 2008 from cardiac arrhythmia. His mother, Yolanda William, still lives in the neighborhood and is a staunch advocate for kids' health and wellness.
The day will also include a children's carnival with inflatables, face painting, arts and crafts, free healthy food donated by HELP/PSI, and giveaways sponsored by LabCorp and ChemRX.
September is Recovery Month, and organizations like Samaritan Village hold events and awareness campaigns across the city. We are united in the understanding that recovery from substance abuse is possible with treatment and related support services. Recovery Month was created by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in 1989.
